At precisely 7.34am we departed beautiful (and now snowing again) Klosters on the first of five trains – our destination being Como, Italy. It is really true that Swiss trains run like clockwork. We met a fellow traveller who helped us out – she was an ex-pat Kiwi and had lived in Switzerland for the past 30 years. It was very interesting travelling part of the journey with her.
I would just like to state that this has to be one of the most spectacular train trips in the world – towering snow-capped mountains, glaciers, frozen lakes, rapids, dramatic valley panoramas. We traveled through pine forests thick with snow to vast frozen desolate valleys. It was a windswept landscape without vegetation reminiscent of the Siberia we know from movies.
During the last leg of this very special Bernina Railway Unesco world heritage listed journey, we had the carriage to ourselves and opened the windows to better appreciate the wonders that were passing us by. E.g. the famous viaduct bridge which is made of stone and completes a 360.
