This one’s for Ben!

The sacred ground of the Arsenal Football Club (Emirates Stadium) was the destination for my first experience of an English football game – Arsenal v West Brom.  Ben’s team (Arsenal) won 1-0.  It is incredible to experience first-hand how passionate the English football fans can be.  The sound that erupted when Arsenal scored was deafening.

We were all barracking for Arsenal, Ben… (well, maybe 1 or 2 of our party didn’t have their hearts in it, but they did love the atmosphere).  We wouldn’t dare barrack for anyone else (you should have seen the security surrounding the ‘away’ team).

It was hilarious though – the Arsenal fans frequently broke out in a chant about Tottenham (for those that don’t know, this is Bruce’s team) singing very loudly… ‘We’ve done it again, we’ve done it again, Tottenham Hotspurs, we’ve done it again!” This refers to Arsenal finishing higher on the table in 2014 than Tottenham.  Bruce really had to bite his tongue, while we all had a quiet chuckle (well, maybe not so quiet). COYS.

For Harry Potter fans, on the way to the stadium we passed through Kings Cross station and happened to notice a number of students making their way to the Hogwart Express via Platform 9 3/4.

Now that’s a vantage point I recognise. Glad you guys had a good day.

One small correction though – the song about Tottenham doesn’t actually refer to beating Tottenham in 2014 so much as beating Tottenham for 19 years straight!

I hope you joined in the famous Mertesacker song: “we’ve got a big friendly[*] German!”.
