The Uke and the Hula

Another quote I like: “Heaven seems a little closer at the beach”IMG_0036

The best way I can describe the local music is to take one of my favourite songs “Somewhere over the rainbow” (Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole – the ukulele version), add a couple of handsome, harmonious Hawaiian’s, a uke, a bass, a tropical setting and there you have it… the perfect way to spend an hour or so after a tiring day snorkelling. I know I’m being unnecessarily cruel, but as we’ll be back hard at work soon enough I’ve got to have something to read when I’m back in the real world to take me right back to these special islands!

The hula has me mesmerised… I love the way the hula dancers interpret the traditional Hawaiian folklore with their gentle hand/arm movements and swaying hips… and Bruce is just mesmerised by the coconuts!! When the IMG_0268tempo increases and the drums kick in, those hips take on a life of their own – love it!

Some curiosities:

  1. We both keep walking up to the wrong side of the car and walking on the wrong side of the path.
  2. We don’t have time to watch much tv, but when we do, the advertisements are hilarious, particularly the ads for pharmaceuticals. Also, a particular cougar ad had us both in stitches.
  3. I still haven’t finished the first chapter of my book.
  4. No mozzies!IMG_0210a
  5. ‘Tommy Bahama” beach chairs. The beauty of staying in a privately owned condo is that you have the use of their equipment: beach umbrella, boogie boards and beach chairs. We absolutely love these beach chairs that strap onto your back and have ample storage for all the necessary items you’ll need on the beach, including a small cooler section.
  6. So many bright, colourful flowers everywhere… their fragrance strong IMG_0210on the balmy air. In particular, the many varieties and colours of the frangipani… although they are called plumeria in Hawaii.
  7. I find it so interesting strolling through supermarkets in other countries… what is the fascination with all things peanut butter?
  8.  Peppa Pig 50+ sunscreen really does work – we have not yet had a case of sunburn! This is miraculous considering all the time we’ve spent in the ocean!
  9. The Brazilian bikini is making a strong fashion statement on the beaches here…
