I think I loved this place from the very first moment. We arrived from Zagreb by sleeper train at dawn… lying on the bunk facing the wide-open window, holding the phone videoing – if there had been a sudden jolt I could have slipped right out! The train was up on the hill winding it’s way down into the town, overlooking the coast and islands as the sun was rising. It was a lovely and surprising way to be introduced to our next destination.
Split didn’t disappoint… a picturesque, busy harbour/port, stacked with the many yachts, cruise ships and day-tripping boats required to take full advantage of the stunning and obviously popular Dalmatian Coast.
Our apartment was located in the old town, close to everything. It was a few flights up as usual and our host was helpful, had some great restaurant recommendations and had a sense of humour, which we always appreciate 🙂
Split was also special because this is where Matty was flying in from Amsterdam to join us for about a week of our holiday. That long-awaited first hug was good!
We had so much fun in Split… the incredible white limestone everywhere (and I mean everywhere) blew me away. It was so beautiful. The maze of alleyways were perfect for wandering and getting lost in… narrow, winding and magical; the food was delicious and incredible value; and the markets filled with linen, lavender, olive oil and souvenirs were just begging to be browsed through.
The ruins of the old fort were awesome. The old town of Split felt to me like a delightful blend of Santorini and the charming medieval hilltop towns of Tuscany… it had a very cool, relaxing holiday vibe. We absolutely loved it!
Of course, we had to get out onto and into the inviting Adriatic. We spent the day on a speedboat… going past the island where Mama Mia 2 was filmed, visiting the aptly named blue cave, got up close and personal with some sheer sea cliffs and caves, stopped for an alcoholic beverage at a classy island resort and spent time exploring the island of Hvar.
The sea was crystal clear and an incredible aquamarine colour. The weather was hot (29 degrees), so of course we jumped into that delicious water off the back of the boat a few times for a most refreshing swim in 25 degrees. Heaven!
