Arrived by ferry to Santorini just before midnight last night. Survived yet another hairy taxi ride up a narrow, winding road to the other side of the island to our destination, Oia, famous for it’s beautiful sunsets. As we arrived at night, we had no idea of the scenery until we awoke this morning to the most beautiful view of the caldera (the centre of the ancient volcano, now filled with the Aegean sea).

Our accommodation is a traditional house which is a cave built into the side of the cliff. Blue sky, blue water, strikingly white buildings contrasting beautifully with vivid pink bouganvillea. It is so pretty – even better than all the postcards and prints you see everywhere.

The weather is quite warm but there is a gentle cool breeze. Is this heaven? We found a great bakery and have even managed to enjoy some HOT capuccinos – Bruce is not embarrassed to ask for mine extra hot – he’s used to me by now. I am giving myself a challenge to coerce all Europeon baristas to change the temperature of their capuccinos. Steph, your Mum would be proud!

Lots of large sleeping dogs (Pat, I don’t know how you’d get on!) and cute little kittens everywhere again – must be a Greek thing. We are both becoming passive smokers, but if this is all we have to complain about, we’re doing ok. This place is magic. Internet access is not as easy here, but we will persist.

These are the views from our room.
Hard to think of a more relaxing place.

So you go all the way across the world to sleep in an expensive cave?

Sounds nice though, I noticed all the stray domestic animals in Athens too, it’s kind of strange at first.

And keep knocking some sense into the barrista’s so they’ll know to make it hot next time I visit!
