I’ve been told – by a very reliable source – that my first experience of Rainbow Bay took place in 1962 when I was two years old.
From that year on, every May school holidays my family (including two older brothers and my younger sister) boarded the overnight train to Murwillumbah. We then caught the greyhound bus to Coolangatta. Our family friend and local owner of our holiday accommodation, Mr Robinson, would collect us in his car and with great excitement we would arrive at our tiny flat “Sun’n’Sea”, Boundary Street, Rainbow Bay.
Two blissful weeks on the beach and in the ocean… my life-long love of the beach was born.
Another magical bonus of visiting every May as a child meant that I celebrated every birthday in this special place.
These wonderful, but simple, holidays continued on and off until 1977 and then Bruce and I continued the tradition when we could with our own children as our family grew. I am very lucky that Bruce still enjoys visiting every few years even without the kids.
Rainbow Bay is my ‘happy place’.
