We were welcomed to the ‘Isle of Valleys’ with the words “Welcome to America’s treasure”. We are definitely doing our best to enjoy all the delightful treasures that Maui has to offer… magnificent peaks, steep valleys, crystal clear waters, stunning rainforest, shooting stars, waterfalls, wildlife (check out the turtle count) and delicious local food.
We had a big day today… a road trip to Hana (thanks Gary B for the idea and the recommendation of the ‘Gypsy’ GPS guide. He is now our constant travelling companion!) It is 9.50pm and I’m sitting on the lanai (verandah) with a glass of wine overlooking the sparkling moonlit water. We have 6.00am start for a 6.5hr snorkelling adventure to the island of Lanai tomorrow morning…
So, how have we spent our first days on Maui? Swimming, walking, driving and exploring the west coast of this stunning island. Just to rub it in a little, the air temp is 27 (with a cool trade wind blowing) and the sea temp is 25.5. That’s my kind of paradise!! On some beaches the sand may be volcanic black, but I guess you’ve just got to go with the flow!
Speaking of volcanoes, today our road trip to Hana included 617 curves and 56 one-lane bridges. Bruce did a great job behind the steering wheel on this challenging drive. We set out at 8.30am and arrived home at 8.15pm – long day, but breathtaking. We had many stops along the way including tiny little coastal villages, majestic waterfalls, wild & remote windswept beaches, volcanic outcrops, mongooses, rapids, sheer cliffs, wild bluffs, rainforest pools and lots of trekking through the rainforests. As they say, it’s not about the destination, but the journey!
