We finally touched-down in Heathrow at 5.30am after 28 hours in transit. Our ride, the A380 was very smooth and fairly quiet. Still couldn’t sleep though… 2 movies and a whole series of Downton Abbey later, it felt good to be walking out of customs with our luggage toward the train to take us to West Dulwich and our little b&b that was to be our home for the next 7 nights.Amongst all the chauffeurs holding names on cards (ours not amongst them), a handsome young man strode towards us with a smile…. Matty had sworn there was no way he was meeting us at the airport at that ungodly hour, but he hauled himself out of bed at 4.30am and booked a cab to make sure he was there in time to surprise us! It was a really lovely surprise and I couldn’t stop smiling.
Matty looks the part of a young professional Londoner – so proud of his achievements!! Anyway, enough of the Mum thing. We had brekky together at South Kensington and he left us to go and earn a living.
Bruce and I then caught a train to our very beautiful B&B and were greeted with a heart-warming double kiss and hug from our lovely hostess, Jane. After such a long time in transit it felt so good to be horizontal and grab an hours’ nap then set out to explore London.
Spring looks good on London…. trees full of leaves and lush green parks full of colourful flowers. Very different to our visit in the middle of winter last time.
We were entertained by the street performers at Covent Garden and were touched by the homeless man feeding the birds in a Soho park. ‘Feed the birds… tuppence a bag‘.
We met up with Matty at Leicester Square and had a drink in a pub and dinner at China Town. Due to the tube strike, we caught a bus home, severely jet-lagged at this point with both of us nodding off and missing our stop as we didn’t really know where we were. Collapsed exhausted into bed.
Thanks Maria, glad you’re enjoying our posts. We’re now in Bath and it’s such a beautiful place!! Hope all is well.
I’m so jealous Mary, it all sounds so wonderful. Keep posting the great photos, just beautiful, love reading of your travels. x Maria K
How fitting that you watched downtown abbey on the plane! Matt appears to be fitting into London well in his stylish attire!
So nice to experience London in the spring, it likely feels like seeing an entirely different place. Sounds like the trip is off to a brilliant start! X Kath
Yes, you’re right Kath, Matt does look very stylish, as do a lot of London men (bow ties and handkerchiefs) and spring in London is indeed very different to the dead of winter. Appreciating your comments Kath. xx
Hey Mary,
I look forward to re-visiting our homeland vicariously thru your blog. Enjoy!
Thanks Gary, I hope you enjoy too and also hope you’re on the mend well and truly. x
you made me cry when I read this… I am so glad Matt is doing well and he looks good (like his dad) Nat..
Thanks Nat, us Mum’s are all the same. x
