After 7 hours on a train from Vienna, our first impression of Krakow was vibrant, clean, noisy and really cool vibes. A little rough around the edges perhaps, but this added to it’s remarkable charm.
Our stylish studio apartment was located in the Jewish Quarter, 5 minutes walk away from the main square where tourists flock to enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, vodka bars, as well as horse and carriage rides and central market selling amber and souvenirs. Very touristy, but hard to resist!
The old town is completely surrounded by a gorgeous park filled with chestnut trees (with the fruit raining down around us) and was created on the imprint of the old fortified wall.
Our walking tour allowed us to familiarize ourselves with this beautiful city and it’s violent and confusing history as well as the impact of the Nazis and the Russians on its long-suffering people.
The architecture is an eclectic mix of many styles with most old town buildings having a spacious tranquil inner courtyard. We loved exploring the incredible landmarks, including the Wawel Castle, the Cathedral and St Francis of Assisi church among other things. The intriguing streets surrounding the main square were filled with gorgeous little cafes and shops.
The local food and wine ridiculously delicious… so much for all our hard work in the gym! Unbelievable value too. Ice cream, cakes and potatoes are predominant, however, the locals seemed to partake but were not overweight by any means!! Many of the restaurants and bars are subterranean… there seems to be a whole world below the surface as many of the city’s buildings have cavernous underground spaces.
The weather has been a little wet, but 23-24 degrees… lovely!
Notes to self:
- Stay to the right… stay to the right.
- MUST give up my sudden and intense passive smoking habit.
