Honu (turtle)

The Honu is the Hawaiian good luck symbol and we have literally been swimming in good luck!

IMG_7563Our very first snorkel experience in Maui happened in a stunning bay called Honolua. To access the bay, we walked through a small area of rainforest, waded through a stream, clambered over rocks and slowly made our way into the murky water. It wasn’t murky for long… as we swam further out, the water was crystal clear over the reef. It was lucky it cleared up as we just about swam straight into a huge Hawaiian sea turtle.

Honolua Bay was amazing, (even the charter boats anchored there forOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA their snorkeling cruises) but getting in and out of the water was a little difficult – well, a little difficult to do it elegantly anyway!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe set out in search of the perfect snorkelling beach and I’m happy to report that this little adventure resulted in another amazing road trip, the best banana bread ever, a seal, a tiny church with an awesome view, a local dancing in the middle of OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAthe road, a delicious bag of toasted coconut (from the local dancing in the middle of the road), and a real espresso coffee (not Starbucks).

After all this excitement, we discovered our little slice of paradise… Napili Bay, just 15 minutes north of our condo.  Don’t let too many in on the secret though.

Great shots of the turtles, it must be amazing to get up so close.

And congrats on finding real coffee in the US!
