Budapest – Bridges, Spires and House Music

We loved the contrasts of Budapest… beautiful old buildings, bridges, spires, cupolas and elegant dining juxtaposed with grungy ruin bars (google it), music, dancing and street food vendors. Awesome.

Our apartment was once again in the Jewish Quarter, located in the same vicinity as all the quirky ruin bars and restaurants, but only 10 mins walk to the Danube. The perfect base for our adventures.

We orientated ourselves on another tourist bus, including a boat trip on the Danube. We had a dip in the thermal pools and thankfully avoided going ‘a over t’ making our way through the labyrinth of wet, extremely slippery tiled hallways and stairs… after my last effort in Fiji, I was being extremely cautious!

We always ask for a restaurant recommendation and we were given a gem… Getto Gulyas served the most delicious traditional dishes and we couldn’t resist returning each night except for one. There was always a queue and people were regularly being turned away… our newfound friend Christian looked after us very well.

Budapest was full of very cool surprises and contrasts. One afternoon we turned into a laneway, following the sound of great music. There before us in the courtyard was a dance floor with salsa dancers strutting their stuff. Loved it! I really need to learn salsa… anyone interested?

Another laneway, following more music and we came across some local talent in the form of a looper/beat boxer, a sax player and a great singer. Then another time – an open mic night. So good.

Weather: Sunny 27 degrees, warm balmy evenings.
