Beautiful Switzerland!

We have arrived in Switzerland, but going back a few days…

Tuesday, 3 January

London showing us her feisty weather – high winds, sudden heavy downpours and so, so cold!  Indoors was the place to be so Harrods was one of our destinations – the food hall in particular.  We felt like little kids in a lolly shop – we loved the bakery area, the chocolate and the seafood areas.  The only purchase made was a baguette for lunch.  We had read about Lady Diana’s engagement ring being on display, but it eluded us… and we were over the crowds by this time.  Everyone else had the same idea to escape the weather as us.

Notting Hill was the next stop – a little like Newtown.  Very interesting.  A drink in a pub at the top of Portobello Road and a David Essex (a very old favourite of mine) song playing – how English is that! We walked the length of Portobello Road and kept a secret lookout for Hugh Grant – no luck…

While back in the city looking for a bus and walking past Westminster Abbey, we noticed that the queues were now quite short (it was late afternoon) and had to take the opportunity to see why it was such a popular wedding venue.  With the latest wedding in our minds, we thoroughly enjoyed having a look around ourselves!

Bruce’s longed-for Tottenham game is on tonight and I’m off to the theatre to a play at the West End starring Sharon Gless (Cagney & Lacey / Burn Notice fame).  I was lucky to get a ticket centre, 4 rows from stage and the play was amazing!  Bruce hasn’t stopped talking about his beloved Tottenham who happened to win on the night.

Wednesday, 4 January

I’m out of action today with a case of the flu, so Bruce chose today to take a look at Wimbledon, an amazing place that he’s grown up watching in TV.  He then finished the day in a pub (with a new mate, Shamus) to watch Manchester United lose.

Thursday, 5 January

Our last full day in London – how the time has flown.  I’m still feeling a little under the weather, so a nice easy day today.  We head to St Paul’s Cathedral, do a little shopping, explore the streets with lots of indoor rest breaks.  At 2.00pm we happen to be strolling past Her Majesty’s Theatre looking for a bus when we noticed crowds entering the theatre for the 2.30 matinee of ‘Phantom’.  So, we tried our luck – asked at the box office if there were any tickets for the show – 30 minutes later we were sitting centre, 8 rows back enjoying one of our favourite shows!  30 pounds ($45) a ticket.  It never hurts to ask.

Friday, 6 January (today)

6.30am cab to Heathrow for our flight to Zurich.  Only 1.15hrs later and we are on our way to the first of 3 trains to beautiful Klosters.  This was one of the highlights of our last trip and it didn’t disappoint this time either.  The scenery was spectacular – only this time covered in snow!

It was a good feeling to see our friends smiling faces greeting us at the station!  Even though the apartment is about 5 minutes walk from the station, Brian, along with Harrison and Lachlan drove to collect us as access is limited due to the depth of the snow.  Klosters has received heavy snow for the last few weeks and the mountains and trails are closed to skiers due to threat of avalanche.

It was wonderful to catch up with Lesley, Brian, Harrison and Lachlan over a beautiful dinner prepared by Lesley and an icy bottle of champagne that Brian had chilled in the snow!
