We arrived in scenic Vernazza last night (in the dark again) after a little bit of drama. We caught the train from Florence, but got off the train at the wrong station. We were the last on the train and the station was deserted, with no signs anywhere. Luckily, we found someone and through gestures discovered that we only had to wait 10mins for the next train that got us to the right place. We were then supposed to be met by our host, but this didn’t happen. We rang him and he directed us in very broken english up our goat track (yes, again) to our ‘green door’ which was our room for the night. Bruce has the nickname ‘Donkey’ (from Shrek) as he is continually hauling luggage up very steep pathways. We slept very well last night.
Apart from the obvious challenges of language and travelling around, we are finding that one of our great challenges is trying to figure out how to flush a toilet and turn a tap on without looking too much like a fool!!
Yesterday, we had a very exhausting day in Florence going through the Medicee Chapel and the Ufizzi gallery. They were worthwhile, but it was a long day and by the end of it we were both Rennaisanced out!
Today, we enjoyed a very relaxing and warm day by the sea. We caught a train to Riomaggiore, walked to Manarola, caught a boat back to Vernazza and enjoyed sitting by the sea watching the passing parade and the sunset. Our room overlooks the water and the square where all the action happes. We’ve met a couple from San Francisco and had a few drinks with them at a very lively bar. It has been a lovely day after the busyness of Florence.
Thank you to those that are leaving comments and emails – we look forward to hearing from home. Ciao!
