18/10/08, Saturday – Winterthur, Switzerland

Departing Klosters (by train) our next destination is Winterthur, 20 mins from Zurich, where our friends, Claudia, Alex and their sons Michael and Sandro have kindly welcomed us into their home for a couple of days. The last time we had seen Claudia was 25 years ago in Sydney, so it was great to catch up over a lovely dinner that night and laugh at old photos.

The next day we were driven through charming villages where we explored the most extraordinary views and the snow at the top of another mountain (Santis – 2800m). There was even enough snow for a snowball fight. I came off second best!

Sandro (juggler extraordinaire) entertained us with his juggling tricks (see photo) and drew quite a crowd at one stage! On the way home we visited a cheese factory where of course we sampled the produce. Delicious.

That night we all went to dinner at Elsa and Frosty (our other Swiss connections who we met 3 years ago when they visited Australia) who prepared us a traditional Swiss meal (Raclette) which as well as being delicious, was fun. We were also entertained by both Elsa and Frosty with traditional Swiss folk music. Most Swiss seem to be able to play at least one instrument.

We had a great time catching up with old friends and being lucky enough to be part of their world for a few days. Thanks for a wonderful few days guys!

Alex is a talented photographer, he has spent countless hours in the Alps capturing the moments. If you would like to see his beautiful mountain panoramas, go to his website http://www.zesoft.ch/panob/panoliste.php

19/10/08 Switzerland to Austria

I felt like a little kid again, with my face up against the window, taking in all the fantastic scenery as we left Switzerland for our journey to Vienna, Austria (9.5 hrs).
